This class introduces students to the five fundamental skills of drawing through the practice of still-life drawing:
  1. The perception of edges
  2. The perception of spaces
  3. The perception of relationships
  4. The perception of light and shadow
  5. The perception of the whole
Students will begin with quick sketches using newsprint and charcoal, developing observation skills and confidence through practice. As the course progresses, students will move toward more focused still-life drawings using pencils.

Students will learn about the different grades of drawing pencils and how to use them effectively to create value, form, light, and shadow. Through observation and practice, students will develop a better understanding of proportion, relationships, and the way light affects the objects they see.

The goal of this class is not simply to learn how to draw, but to learn how to see.

No matter your level of experience, this class is an opportunity to explore drawing in a supportive environment, strengthen your observational skills, and develop greater confidence in translating what you see onto paper.

Please be aware that charcoal can be messy, so plan to wear clothing you do not mind getting dirty. We will reserve the last 10 minutes of class for cleanup. Parking available at the Carlisle Congregational Church, located next door to the Brick Building
